Where Ashes Breathe: Landscapes in Renewal
Am 23. Juli 2022 brach der größte Waldbrand der tschechischen Geschichte aus. 1.600 Hektar Wald brannten in der Böhmischen Schweiz. Das Kunstprojekt „Where Ashes Breathe“ erkundet, wie künstlerische Imagination, gemeinsame Exkursionen und Interventionen unsere Vorstellung von solchen Ereignissen verändern können. Das Kunstprojekt wurde von der Kuratorin Thereza Novakova in Kooperation mit dem Netzwerk- Artbiom entwickelt. Es handelt sich um ein umfassendes Rechercheprojekt mit Fokus auf das Verhältnis von Mensch und Natur.
Nachdem verschiedene Präsentationen und Kunstaktionen in diesem Kontext im Katastrophengebiet und in Krasna Lipa stattfanden, soll das Projekt mit der Ausstellung im Torhaus Wehlen um ein Deutsch- Tschechisches Kooperationsformat erweitert werden.

As we walk through a barren landscape where life is only just returning — a place that at first glance appears desolate, sorrowful — we are confronted with thoughts of destruction, futility, and grief. We expect a shock, a sense of vertigo. But if we look again, we may glimpse the fertility of ash, the quiet stirrings of mosses, fungi, and seeds that have been patiently waiting for their moment.
The burnt landscape reveals how far our initial perceptions may be from reality. It has taken on a new structure, a new aesthetic. It becomes a space of silence and free contemplation — an inverted world, a stage for beginnings, fears, and awakenings. The scorched ground is a living metaphor for renewal, a memory buried in the unconscious. Visually, it is a new scenery marked by the rapid colonization of mosses, herbs, and especially birch and aspen — as well as larch and pine. When we form a relationship with the rock and forest, it becomes intimate, personal.
